Aljada Mall

Sharjah, UAE

Aljada Mall is the landmark retail and entertainment destination at the heart of Aljada, Sharjah’s flagship mixed-use development. Spanning approximately 3.9 million square feet, the mall serves as the anchor attraction and final phase of the family entertainment district that forms the social and cultural centre of the wider masterplan.

Inspired by the moment a water droplet touches the earth’s surface, the district is characterised by a series of elliptical architectural forms set within a lush landscaped environment. As a destination expected to attract significant visitor volumes from across the UAE, our role was focused on developing a comprehensive parking and mall navigation framework that links the wider Aljada masterplan, the parking environment, and the retail destination itself, ensuring that users can navigate confidently while maintaining a strong connection to place.

‍

Strategic Drivers

  • Memorable Navigation: Support user recall through colour, naming, numbering, and visual anchors that simplify return journeys.
  • Masterplan Integration: Align the mall’s navigation system with the wider Aljada district structure and identity framework.
  • User-Centred Experience: Support visitors of all ages and familiarity levels through clear, consistent, and accessible navigation tools.

EXPERIENCE STRATEGY AND DESIGN

Connecting Arrival to Experience

The wayfinding strategy was built around the complete visitor journey, beginning well before anyone reaches the mall entrance. A hierarchy of vehicular directional signage provides clear routing toward parking and arrival zones from the surrounding road network, with entrance identification establishing a strong sense of arrival at the threshold. Parking guidance systems then direct visitors efficiently to available areas, so that the first experience of the destination is one of ease rather than uncertainty. The aim was to resolve the most stressful part of a mall visit, finding the building, finding a space, knowing where you are, before the experience of the destination itself even begins.

Supporting Exploration Within the Mall

Once visitors transition from parking into the mall environment, navigation shifts from directional guidance to destination discovery. Lift lobby directories, pedestrian directional signage, and mall identification elements support movement into the retail environment, while large-scale directories, maps, and area identifiers help visitors understand the overall layout of the destination.

The approach encourages exploration while maintaining confidence. Visitors can move freely between retail, entertainment, dining, and leisure destinations without losing their sense of orientation. Information is delivered at key decision points, allowing the architecture and public spaces to remain the primary experience.

FEATURE MOMENT

The Parking Recall System

The most common anxiety in a large retail destination is returning to a vehicle after hours of exploration. The parking strategy was designed around this specific moment. Colour, naming, alphanumeric column references, level identification, and bay numbering work together so that visitors have multiple independent points of recall. A person who forgets their level can fall back on their colour. A person who forgets their colour can fall back on the column photograph they took on arrival. No single layer carries all the weight.

An Extension of Place identity

Aljada Mall sits within the Central Hub district of the wider Aljada masterplan, and the wayfinding system was designed to make that relationship legible. Colour references within the mall navigation align with the district identity framework, so that the experience of navigating the mall reinforces a visitor's sense of where the mall sits within the broader destination. Navigation becomes a layer of placemaking rather than a system laid on top of it.

As the mall forms part of the Central Hub, blue can be adopted to represent the zone.

At Aljada Mall, a 3.9 million square foot destination becomes somewhere visitors can explore with confidence, return to with ease, and remember as a place rather than just a building. Every layer of navigation, from the road to the parking column to the retail floor, was designed around the people moving through it. That is what exceptional human experiences look like at the scale of a landmark destination.
