AMC Theatres entered the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during a pivotal cultural shift, becoming the first international cinema operator licensed to open movie theatres following the lifting of the country’s long-standing cinema ban. From the first opening at Panorama Mall in 2018 through to recent developments in 2024, we were appointed to develop and deliver a consistent wayfinding and signage strategy across a growing portfolio of cinema destinations throughout the Kingdom.

Our role focused on creating a scalable navigational framework that remains clear and familiar to repeat visitors while adapting to the architectural character, commercial positioning, and operational requirements of each location.

Spanning flagship cinemas, mid-range malls, and emerging urban centres, the strategy balances brand consistency with site-specific experiences that support movement, orientation, and atmosphere throughout the visitor journey.

‍

STRATEGIC DRIVERS

  • Establish a consistent wayfinding system across a rapidly expanding cinema network
  • Support intuitive navigation across varied venue scales and audience types
  • Align navigation with AMC’s cinematic brand experience and atmosphere
  • Adapt materiality and detailing to different commercial and architectural contexts
  • Integrate placemaking and experiential moments within circulation spaces

EXPERIENCE STRATEGY AND DESIGN

UNDERSTANDING THE CINEMA AUDIENCE

We began by identifying six core user groups that shape the AMC cinema experience, including the Big Screen Lover, Luxury Lover, Adrenaline Junkie, Experience Chaser, Families, and the Offer Seeker. Each audience arrives with different expectations, pacing, and behavioural patterns that influence how they move through the cinema environment.

By mapping complete visitor journeys from online booking through to cinema exit, we identified moments of anticipation, pause, and decision-making throughout the experience. This process informed the placement, hierarchy, and tone of wayfinding interventions across ticketing, concessions, lobbies, auditoriums, amenities, and exits.

The resulting system supports clarity during high traffic periods while preserving the immersive atmosphere expected within a cinematic environment.

‍

A FLEXIBLE WAYFINDING FRAMEWORK

The wayfinding strategy was designed to support the full visitor journey across multiple venue formats while remaining operationally efficient and visually consistent. Clear identification systems, intuitive terminology, and strategically positioned signage guide visitors naturally through arrival, ticketing, concessions, lobby waiting areas, screen access, auditorium entry, and exits.

Orientation is reinforced at multiple scales through auditorium numbering, embedded seat identification, and branded environmental graphics for premium cinema formats such as IMAX and RealD 3D.

Rather than relying on excessive directional signage, the system integrates orientation directly into architectural surfaces and environmental moments, creating a cleaner and more seamless visitor experience.

‍

ADAPTING THE BRAND

While rooted in AMC’s global brand identity, the design language was carefully adapted to suit the character and commercial positioning of each venue.

Premium locations such as Panorama Mall introduced polished metals, warm backlighting, and reflective finishes that elevate the cinematic atmosphere through material richness and detail.

Mid-range and high-volume locations adopted more economical material palettes, including acrylic applications and standard metal finishes, while maintaining consistency in typography, layout, hierarchy, and messaging structure.

This balance between flexibility and consistency allowed each cinema to feel responsive to its context while preserving operational clarity and immediate brand recognition across the wider portfolio.

FEATURE MOMENT

FLEXIBLE CINEMA FRAMEWORK

A scalable wayfinding strategy was developed to support multiple cinema typologies, balancing operational consistency with site-specific architectural and commercial requirements.

‍

PUBLIC ART AND EXPERIENCE

Film-inspired murals and curated quote walls introduce experiential moments within circulation spaces, reinforcing AMC’s cinematic identity while also acting as memorable orientation landmarks throughout the venues.
