Located at the heart of Muscat, Tilal Al Irfan is an ambitious mixed-use urban district envisioned as the city’s future central community. Developed through a collaboration between OMRAN Group and Majid Al Futtaim, the masterplan brings together residential neighborhoods, hospitality, retail, business, and public realm experiences for a community of over 50,000 residents. Positioned minutes from Muscat International Airport and adjacent to the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre, the development is set to become a defining new urban gateway for Oman.

LIMAH’s vision was to transform arrival into a landmark public art experience that signals entry, identity, and aspiration. Rather than creating a conventional entrance feature, the intervention was conceived as a memorable gateway moment for both the development and the wider region. The design establishes an iconic threshold that complements Tilal Al Irfan’s future-focused vision while aligning with Majid Al Futtaim’s brand values. Through sculptural form, material expression, and integrated digital layers, the gateway sets the emotional tone for the journey ahead, creating a powerful sense of “I have arrived.”

EXPERIENCE STRATEGY AND DESIGN

The gateway was designed as a celebratory threshold into Tilal Al Irfan, building anticipation and emotional excitement at the moment of arrival. Inspired by the acacia tree native to Oman, the sculptural canopy interprets the umbrella-like branching form into a contemporary public art language that naturally guides vehicles and pedestrians into the district. The design creates a powerful sense of place through gateway canopies and shaded arrival sequences, transforming the entrance road into an immersive procession. Local materials are reinterpreted in a modern expression, while integrated digital elements are woven seamlessly into the sculptural structure and landscape. The result is a unique arrival choreography where public art, shade, movement, and identity merge to create a memorable first impression and establish Tilal Al Irfan’s distinct urban character.

FEATURE MOMENT

Imagined as a luminous tree-like gateway sculpture, the feature transforms throughout the day and night. By day, dichroic glass filters sunlight into shifting colour spectrums, casting dynamic reflections across the arrival route. By night, transparent solar panels power LED glass screens and digital media layers, enabling programmable content, seasonal storytelling, and evolving identity moments that keep the gateway alive after dark.
